Why did Replit force you to fork a Repl to run it?

Question:
When I want to run a Repl, it just asks you to fork it to run it. It is not very convinient, so does anybody know what the purpose of this is?

It likely reduces the load on Replit’s servers, just forcing users to have an account probably helps reduce the number of times Repls are run. It probably also helps with storage issues; I don’t pretend to fully understand the previous cover page running system, but my understanding is that under the hood, the Repl was cloned (called a ghost fork) and then run. While it can be somewhat annoying, it seems pretty likely this change is here to stay.
