A policy update on automated actions

This is a reminder about Replit’s rules on account automation, and some examples about about how our moderation team will be enforcing these rules going forward.

Under Replit’s terms of service, it is not permitted to create accounts with automation or register accounts in bulk without prior written approval from Replit (clause 4.6).

It’s also not permitted to launch any automated system to access Replit in a manner that sends more request messages or any other content to our servers in a given period of time than a human can reasonably produce in the same period (clause 4.14).

Here are some examples of how we’ll be enforcing these rules going forward:

  • Automated actions: Please do not create bots to perform actions on Replit such as commenting, running, liking, or following, without obtaining permission first.

  • Account creation: If we detect that a user has created a large number of accounts, they may be banned. If you have a legitimate reason for doing this, please obtain permission first.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to share them here, and I’ll try to answer them for you. Thanks for reading!

Isn’t the link you sent for warn/ban appeals?

Is requesting data, (not modifying it) within a rate limit of 5/s allowed?

^^ Is there a good number for this?

Yes but also to contact us site mods (by technicality). For now just make a “warn appeal” but we will be adding a question ticket to the site.

The guidance given here is specifically about performing actions like those mentioned (commenting, running, liking, following, or registering accounts). You probably won’t hit any problems by making requests to the site with a reasonable rate limit. We can’t be very specific about what the rate limits are, but if you hit them, you’ll get an error and have to back off before retrying.
